A forest fire that erupted Saturday in Türkiye's northwestern province of Canakkale has forced the evacuation of five villages, authorities said.Canakkale Governor said on social media platform X that 11 planes and 10 helicopters, along with ground crews, have been deployed to battle the blaze. The villages were evacuated as a precaution, as the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds, the Governor said. Torrential rains sparked intense floods and damaged hundreds of homes in the northeast Nigerian town of Potiskum, emergency authorities and a local resident told on Friday.Weather authorities in the West African nation had warned just last week that parts of 21 of the country's 36 states were under a flood warning due to seasonal rains. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency said more than 200 houses were damaged, while a local civil servant estimated 500 houses were severely hit following the overnight rains. Türkiye has been battling forest fires across the country this summer, fuelled by scorching heat. One of the latest incidents broke out last night in a forested area between Bademli and Eğribucak neighborhoods. Upon receiving the alert, teams from the Regional Directorate of Forestry and the Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.The fire fighting operation has involved 5 helicopters, 2 planes, 271 vehicles, and 624 personnel. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in several parts of the capital and surrounding areas. According to IMD’s latest update, intense rain bands have been observed over the Delhi-NCR region.The department forecasts continuous heavy showers for the next few hours, raising the possibility of localized flooding and traffic disruption. Following the downpour, several areas across Delhi reported severe waterlogging, further complicating movement during morning hours. Mandalay Earthquake: Damage, Losses, and Response Report
The powerful Mandalay earthquake that struck on 28 March caused casualties, missing persons, injuries and damage to basic infrastructure in 10 regions and states, including the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory.According to the ground survey, the loss in the government sector, like dams, roads, bridges, education, health, train transport, electricity, energy, communication, religious affairs, culture, government-owned factories and workshops and office buildings is over K4,779 billion. Meanwhile, the private sector, like housing, private factories, workshops, businesses, private schools, hospitals, clinics and agricultural products, face the loss of over K3,200 billion, totalling more than K7,979 billion (US$3,800 million)Among regions and states, Mandalay Region suffered the most damage and losses, followed by Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory in second place, and Sagaing Region in third. By sector, damage to government offices, buildings, office equipment, and staff housing was the highest, whereas the damage to residential buildings was the second highest, and the religious buildings was the third highest.The government has provided support for the losses and damage caused by the earthquake. From the occurrence date of the earthquake up to11 August 2025, more than K42.094 billion from the National Disaster Management Fund has been provided for emergency food assistance as directly benefit to the affected people, over K4.733 billion for assistance to the families of the deceased, K0.175 billion for the injured, and more than K1,605.571 billion for the reconstruction of houses, totalling over K1,652.573 billion. More than K340 billion has been spent on early rehabilitation activities. The foodstuffs and commodities donated by local and foreign donors are also distributed to the quake-affected areas promptly.The earthquake destroyed the government offices, basic education schools, and staff housing. To ensure accommodation for staff and the reopening of offices and schools, 442 container offices, 9,048 container houses, and 20 temporary prefabricated school buildings have been distributed to ministries, organizations, and affected areas. In addition, in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, 2,972 temporary housing units have been constructed, while 127 units are still under construction, and 57 temporary school buildings have been built, whereas seven buildings are still under construction.Under the guidance of the Head of State, rehabilitation activities are being carried out with proper momentum in each sector. All basic education schools are reopened on time, and in the healthcare sector, hospitals and clinics have also been reopened. The maintenance work was completed 94.43 per cent in the road, 38.83 per cent in the bridge and 96.39 per cent in the railways sectors. In the telecommunications sector, 97.19 per cent of services have been restored, while in electricity distribution, the coverage has reached 98.61 per cent. To ensure the successful completion of the rehabilitation measures, efforts are being carried out with momentum by sector and organization.National Disaster Management Committee
