Myanmar exported over 480.82 metric tonnes of honey valued at US$0.72 million in the first two months of the current financial year 2025-2026 beginning 1 April, said U Myo Tint, Deputy Director of the Apiculture Division under the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department.Myanmar delivered over 279.8 metric tonnes of honey worth $419,730 to Japan, and 201 tonnes worth $301,500 to Thailand in the April-June period, the Apiculture Division’s data showed.Myanmar’s Apiculture business started in 1979, and honey export began in 1985. Myanmar’s honey mostly went to China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand. Myanmar produces sesame honey, jujube honey, Niger honey, sunflower honey, lychee honey and flower honey. Sunflower honey, jujube honey and niger honey are mostly in demand.Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand are the leading honey-producing states in the region. Myanmar is exerting concerted efforts to boost honey production. Beekeeping and crop farming integration practices are found in the central Myanmar regions, focusing on sustainable and profitable production.Myanmar’s honey production is estimated at over 4,000 metric tonnes annually. Sixty per cent went to foreign markets while the remaining was designated for domestic consumption. Honey is utilized as a traditional medicine in the country.There are some state-owned beekeeping stations with 6,200 beehives in 31 townships and over 950 private beekeeping businesses operating with nearly 200,000 beehives.Moreover, two million acres of crops contribute to bee pollination every year. The beekeeping businesses near the crop fields contribute to the successful yield of the crop as well as quality bee production. — ASH/KKGNLM
