EU proposes 90% climate emission cuts by 2040
The EU on Wednesday unveiled its long-delayed target for cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Wopke.
Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner, Climate, Net Zero & Clean Growth said "So, ladies and gentlemen, it is for all of these reasons that we're presenting a reduction target of net 90% by 2040, and we're clearly ambitious. And yet, and that is of the essence, we are pragmatic and flexible on the how, on how to achieve it. It's a huge transition, let's just realise that. And therefore, it is of the most importance to be non-dogmatic about how to reach success."
The proposal comes as much of Europe roasts in an early summer heatwave, which scientists say are becoming more intense, frequent and widespread due to human-induced climate change.
