Zoo animals in northern Japan cool off with ice blocks in sweltering heat. As Hokkaido Island continues to experience intense heat, Asahiyama Zoo treated some of its animals to huge blocks of ice on Tuesday. More than 10 blocks of ice, each weighing 135 kilograms, were placed in the exhibit areas. Zookeepers at the facility in northern Japan place the frozen blocks in the animals’ enclosures every year to help them cope with the sweltering temperatures.
