Israeli tank shelling kills 51 people awaiting aid trucks in Gaza: Health ministry

GAZA: Israeli tank shellfire killed at least 51 Palestinians on Tuesday (Jun 17) as they awaited aid trucks in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, the territory's health ministry said, adding that dozens of others were wounded.

Medics said residents said Israeli tanks fired shells at crowds of desperate Palestinians awaiting aid trucks along the main eastern road in Khan Younis. They said at least 51 people were killed and 200 wounded, with at least 20 of them in critical condition.

BOJ keeps rate target unchanged at around 0.5%

The Bank of Japan has decided to keep its benchmark interest-rate unchanged. The central bank target of around 0.5 percent for short-term rates will remain in place. It made the announcement after its two-day policy meeting ended on Tuesday.

The BOJ decision comes amid uncertainty about the economic effects in Japan of US President Donald Trump's tariff measures.

Trump to return to Washington early from G7 summit in Canada

The White House says President Donald Trump will leave early from the Group of Seven summit in Canada and return to Washington.

In a social media post on Monday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State." She cited the "many important matters" the president needs to attend to. Trump is expected to get back to work at the White House to deal with rising tensions in the Middle East.

Thai trade proposal to be submitted to US this week, finance minister says

Thailand's formal trade proposal will be submitted to the U.S. this week, with the first round of discussions set to take place online, the country's finance minister said on Tuesday, as it seeks to head off the threat of higher U.S. tariffs.  The Southeast Asian nation faces a 36% U.S. tariff on its exports if a reduction cannot be negotiated before a 90-day pause that caps President Donald Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs at a baseline of 10% expires in July.

Trump told Israel not to kill Iran's supreme leader

US President Donald Trump rejected a plan by Israel to kill Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, three US officials have told BBC's US partner CBS News.

Trump reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that assassinating Khamenei was "not a good idea", according to one official. The president has not commented publicly on the report. The conversation is said to have happened since Israel launched its attack on Iran on Friday.

UN slashes global aid plan over ‘deepest funding cuts ever’

THE United Nations said Monday it was drastically scaling back its global humanitarian aid plans because of the “deepest funding cuts ever” — leaving tens of millions of people facing dire straits.
The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it was seeking $29 billion in funding for 2025 compared to the $44 billion originally requested in December, in a “hyper-prioritized” appeal.
