Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended his country's plan to expand military operations in the Gaza Strip, saying on Sunday its goal is to free the enclave from Hamas.  Israel on Friday announced a plan to expand military operations to take control of Gaza City. The plan has triggered criticism from the international community.

The prime minister said Israel's security cabinet had instructed the military to dismantle the two remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City and the central camps. He said they will do so by first enabling civilians to safely leave the combat areas to designated safe zones. He added "this is the best way to end the war and the best way to end it speedily."
