Statement on Recent Violent Attacks: MNHRC condemns violence against educators
The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission issued a statement Thursday condemning recent violent attacks on educators and students as the new academic year begins.
The statement expressed deep concern over incidents including the killing of a school principal and her husband in Nyaung-U Township, the abduction of a high school teacher and female students in Sidoktaya Township, and other targeted attacks on education professionals in Natmauk and Wetchoat villages.
The commission said these acts violate fundamental human rights, including the right to life, security, and education, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Myanmar’s 2014 National Education Law. It further noted that the destruction of public infrastructure and continued violence threaten national peace, security, and socio-economic development.
The Commission urged all stakeholders to work toward peace, uphold the rule of law, and protect those in the education sector from harm.
All forms of terrorism, it said, are criminal acts that must be prevented under the 2014 Counter-Terrorism Law. The statement concluded with a call for inclusive dialogue and collective action to ensure safe learning environments across the country.
