Paying Tribute to Martyrs: 78th Anniversary Martyrs’ Day ceremony in Yangon

The 78th Anniversary Martyrs’ Day was observed at the Martyrs’ Mausoleum in Yangon on 19th July.

Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing attended the ceremony, and cordially greeted the family members of martyrs and guests. He highlighted the pivotal role of General Aung San, who led Myanmar’s struggle for independence.

Chairman, State Administration Council, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said "General Aung San led the country’s struggle for independence. He envisioned Myanmar becoming a nation that could stand alongside others on the world stage after gaining its independence. This vision is evident in the speeches he delivered. To fulfill General Aung San’s aspirations and honor his sacrifice for the nation, all Myanmar citizens must work together in unity for the good of the country. Moreover, the true value of a nation lies in its independence and development. However, discipline is equally important—without it, the country could face serious challenges."

After that, the Prime Minister laid wreaths at the mausoleum to pay homage to General Aung San and the fallen martyrs. Union Ministers, regional officials, senior military officers, and other dignitaries also participated in the wreath-laying ceremony. The State Flag was lowered to half-mast, and the Guard of Honour presented arms while the military bugle sounded the last post. A two-minute silence was observed to honor the memory of the martyrs.

Family members of the martyrs shared their reflections on the occasion.

As for my great-grandfather, I happened to read about him in a book that described him as an architect of Kayin-Bamar friendship. Although I am no longer with my great-grandfather, I have come to understand his wish to build friendship through loving-kindness. We will continue to carry forward his legacy."

Myint Myint Khaing, Family of Mahn Ba Khaing said "Our leaders sacrificed their lives for the country, paving the way for us to stand tall and independent in the world as a developed nation. If we work in unity, we can fulfill the aspirations of our leaders."

Dr. Min Myanmar, Family of U Ohn Maung said "We truly appreciate the efforts of the state leaders in organizing the ceremony every year without fail."

Lt-Gen Aung Ko Ko (Retired), Family of Yebaw Ko Htwe said "If we review the work undertaken over the past 78 years, we have not been dutiful enough in following the path laid down by General Aung San and our leaders. They strove for national solidarity, the preservation of independence and sovereignty, and the development of the country. They also laid down plans for the nation’s future."

The ceremony also featured wreath-laying by representatives from the Yangon Region government, political parties, foreign diplomatic missions, and various organizations. People also gathered to pay their respects to the martyrs at the mausoleum.

In Pyin Oo Lwin, the Union Minister visited the Research Sub-department and local MSMEs to oversee food quality testing, wastewater control, and support for safe consumer products. He urged officials to ensure lab services meet international standards and improve skills for better testing and support for MSME businesses.

He stressed that public hospitals have been organized to provide full-time emergency patient care, and efforts are being made to minimize out-of-pocket expenses for patients by reducing the costs through effective planning and resource allocation.
He noted that in order to improve the overall health standards of the public and to increase life expectancy, it is essential to strengthen the delivery of primary healthcare services. To achieve this, it is important to adequately produce sufficient human resources in the health sector and assign them responsibilities accordingly.
The Senior General continued that the State is continuously supporting the improvement of healthcare standards for ethnic nationalities, with the understanding that only with good health can people work and pursue education.
He expressed his pleasure for fresher medical doctors and dentists to serve their duties to provide healthcare services to the people, as health personnel are responsible for resolving health problems of the people as much as possible.
In implementing public healthcare services, the Senior General unveiled that the State is implementing effective policies and plans based on the country’s resources in order to take preventive measures to stop the outbreak of diseases, as well as provide high-quality medical treatment in case illnesses occur.
He disclosed that the government is placing great emphasis on ensuring that the public can receive medical treatment in a peaceful and comfortable environment. To that end, it is upgrading and renovating public hospitals, constructing new ones, enhancing disease detection and advanced medical care, and consistently supplying medicines and modern medical equipment.

According to the 2024 Population and Housing Census, the Senior General explained that Myanmar’s life expectancy is 69 years. Among ASEAN countries, it ranks ninth, and when compared with neighbouring countries, it ranks fifth.
The Senior General urged them that emphasis should be placed on actions such as improving nutrition and living conditions, administering preventive vaccinations, analyzing and addressing mortality rates, and implementing relevant measures effectively in the respective regions where responsibilities are assigned.

During the period from 1995 to 1999, the shipyard served docking of 49 vessels, and then its functions halted. As the Gyoungwaing Shipyard has aged significantly, and due to the lack of operational activities, the prolonged suspension of work could lead to increased deterioration and losses. Union Minister Dr. Charlie Than highlighted the severe damage caused by the March 28 earthquake to homes, religious buildings, bridges, and offices, stressing the government’s commitment to timely support for affected communities.

A nearly extinct species of leatherback sea turtle was caught in a fishing net in Myebon Township, Rakhine State, and released by residents, according to local sources. The turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, is nearly extinct in the world, and was caught on 16 July on a beach near Shintaung village.
“It was caught in our fishing net. The turtle was very, very big and still alive. The locals have never caught one of this size before. As it also seemed to be a rare species, it has been released,” said a news source from Rakhine State.
